Dr Bruce Bauer, an internationally recognised Pediatric Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon whose career has united surgical innovation, three-dimensional artistry, and design, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Chicago Light the Night Gala 2026, presented by Nevus Outreach Inc., on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
For more than four decades, Dr Bauer has devoted his career to pediatric plastic and
reconstructive surgery, with particular expertise in the treatment of large and giant
congenital melanocytic nevi, complex birthmarks, ear deformities and reconstruction,
cleft lip and palate, and pediatric tissue expansion. His specialised reconstructive
techniques and extensive experience treating children with complex conditions have earned him national and international recognition and patients from across the globe.
That same ability to visualise complex structures in three dimensions has also shaped his life as an artist.
Raised in a medical family that encouraged his artistic talents, Bauer began cutting
stones and working with silver and gold as a teenager. His early interest in carving,
sculpture, and metalwork preceded his surgical training, and later, he became deeply
interconnected with it. After placing jewellery-making largely on hold for the first 3 decades of his medical career, Bauer returned to the art form and created BSBee Designs.
Today, Bauer creates one-of-a-kind wearable sculptures that combine gemstones,
precious metals, carving, and three-dimensional construction. Rather than designing
around traditional jewellery forms, he often begins with what he sees within an individual
stone—its colour, inclusions, patterns, or natural imagery—and develops the piece around that story.
His work is strongly influenced by nature, wildlife, photography, Asian art, and Art
Nouveau, with subjects ranging from bees, dragonflies, and birds to whales, polar bears,
and marine life. Many pieces reflect Bauer’s travels and photography throughout the Arctic,
Antarctica, Africa, Asia, and South America, as well as his concern for wildlife and the natural
environment.
Bauer’s artwork has been represented by Wells Gallery at the Sanctuary Hotel on Kiawah
Island and Faust Gallery in Santa Fe and Scottsdale. His work has also appeared at the
American Craft Exhibition and internationally at Milan Jewellery Week in 2022.
At the Chicago Light the Night Gala, selected BSBee Designs jewellery will be showcased
during the cocktail reception, with pieces also prepared for the evening’s silent auction.
The “Two Sophies” will model selected works, presenting Bauer’s jewellery as it was created to be experienced: sculptural art interacting with the wearer. A portion of the profits from all sales will be donated to Nevus Outreach Inc. The evening will culminate in the presentation of Bauer’s Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising a career in which medicine, innovation, craftsmanship, and art have remained uniquely connected.
