MTN Nigeria has launched a new music talent show, Next Afrobeats Star (NAS), a groundbreaking music competition created to discover and elevate the next generation of Afrobeats talent. The company announced this at a media launch event held on Saturday, August 2 at their Ikoyi headquarters, Lagos.

Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria, said: “Next Afrobeats Star is a bold initiative by MTN Nigeria, in partnership with Ultima Studios and ONErpm, to discover and elevate the next global icon of Afrobeats. Today, Afrobeats is a global force, filling stadiums, topping charts, and inspiring millions. But the journey is far from over. The Next Afrobeats Star is a platform where raw talent meets real opportunity. Where the rhythm of Nigeria meets the reach of the world.”

If you’re an emerging artist or a fan of the genre, here are five important things to keep in mind:

The Prizes Are Life-Changing

The winner will receive a $100,000 music deal through MTN’s partnership with ONErpm, one of the fastest-growing music distribution companies in the world, and Ultima studios’ record label, U-Records. In addition, four other finalists will receive music deals ranging from $25,000 to $75,000. These deals come with professional support, including career development, marketing, and music distribution.

Registration Is Simple

To get started, text NAS to 13013 using an MTN line. You’ll receive a unique code along with a link to the registration portal.  Once you open the link, enter your code and email address, then complete your application.  You will have access to 10 to 12  instrumentals produced by some of the biggest music producers in the industry, who are also judges on the show. Choose a beat, record your track, and upload it directly to the website. If you prefer in-person auditions, you can attend one of the regional auditions in Jos, Enugu, or Lagos.

The Judges Are Big-Time Producers

Four of Afrobeats’ most respected producers are behind the music on Next Afrobeats Star, and they’ve each created original beats for contestants to record with. Sarz, known for hits like Wizkid’s “Jaiye Jaiye” and Wurld’s “Mad,” brings his signature sound. P. Prime, the producer behind “Loading” by Olamide and Fireboy’s “Bandana,” adds his genre-bending energy. Andre Vibez, who produced Rema’s global hit “Calm Down,” and Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, brings a fresh, global touch, while industry veteran Puffy Tee, known for classics like “Yahooze” and “Eleko,” adds years of hit-making experience to the mix.

This Is More Than a Talent Show

Next Afrobeats Star goes beyond performances and TV time. It’s a career development platform designed to equip artists with the tools they need to thrive in the music industry. Contestants will create and perform original songs, receive hands-on guidance from the producer-judges, and get access to mentorship from experienced A&R executives. With professional studio sessions, distribution support, and performance coaching, the show is structured to help emerging artists build sustainable, long-term careers beyond the spotlight.

The Show Has Serious Backing

This isn’t MTN’s first time creating a platform that launches stars. The brand has a strong legacy in music talent development, most notably with Project Fame, which gave rise to artists like Chidinma and Iyanya. Now, they’re raising the bar with Next Afrobeats Star in partnership with Ultima Studios, the same powerhouse behind Project Fame and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. With MTN’s deep-rooted commitment to youth empowerment and Ultima’s reputation for top-tier production, this show is built to be a high-impact, career-defining opportunity for the next generation of Afrobeats talent.
