The best stand-alone VR headset

The Oculus Quest 2 is an all-in-one virtual reality system for everyone. It stands out as one of the best, if not the best entry-level VR headset today. It’s light, powerful, cheap, and is able to be hooked up to your gaming PC with a single USB Type-C cable for full tethered action.

It has a slicker, more intuitive design, faster performance and better resolution than its predecessor, the Oculus Quest.

Thanks to Oculus Link, the Quest 2 becomes more than a standalone VR headset. It becomes an all-in-one VR headset capable of great on-the-move VR and gaming across SteamVR and Oculus Rift compatible titles. The only con is the compulsory Facebook account login.

It’s also one of the quickest headsets to setup on this list. With Inside-Out tracking and hand tracking built-in, you can go from unboxing to up-and-running in VR in just a couple of minutes. All this and more for only $393.

The overall best VR headset

The Valve Index is a truly next-gen VR headset. it has an ultra-crisp display that runs fairly well even with older GPUs, a wider field of view, a higher refresh rate and Valve’s ‘knuckle’ controllers, which can track the movement of every finger.

It boasts some impressive technology and handy convenience features, like per-finger tracking on the excellent Index controllers, USB passthrough for future accessories, and fantastic, crystal clear audio via the near-field speakers, which hover just above the ears. It’s also comfortable to wear, The Index uses external “lighthouse” boxes, meaning you need to set those up in a room first.

The Valve Index comes at a steep price price between 1,668 – $2,199, its excellent balance of quality, performance, and comfort makes it a deserving ask for this beast.

The best VR headset for console

The Sony PSVR headset is still the only head-mounted display for gaming consoles and its screen still offers a surprisingly immersive experience.

The PlayStation VR is a surprisingly competent VR headset. Its refresh rate is responsive, and has no issues with the reliability of its head-tracking.

It has near PC-quality performance, some of its cons include; lacking required accessories in box, poor job sealing out light and spotty motion controller tracking

Though its resolution isn’t cutting-edge; it delivers in many virtual reality games, many of which are exclusives. It costs $350.

The best VR headset for PC

The Oculus Rift S builds upon the original Oculus Rift, being one of the best VR headsets around for connecting to a PC and enjoying immersive gaming.

The Oculus Rift S is a lot sleeker and now has a 1280 x 1440 resolution display with a fast 80Hz refresh rate. it’s also lighter as well, which makes it ideal for long sessions of VR gaming. It also has neat speakers that are integrated in the headband, this avoids the need to use the original Rift’s onboard headphones.

Oculus is making the Rift S completely backwards compatible with the original Rift titles, and making the Rift forward compatible with the vast majority of games released for the Rift S with some minor exceptions. It costs $399.

It has a motion controller with a touchpad and trigger button, allowing you to interact with the VR worlds in front of you in a way previously impossible without it.

Being powered by a smartphone, the headset’s performance is entirely tied to the phone slotted in. However, using an older Galaxy phone may noticeably affect the experience. This headset is quite affordable and will set you back by $170.
