Whether or not It is Black history, Black women have taken it upon themselves to be prodigies for Blackness and excellence. Pushing, breaking, and completely annihilating boundaries, Black women are redefining what can or cannot be done. They are really going all out this period and should be studied.
Tiwa Savage, the popular afrobeat singer and songwriter, is one of these women. A few days ago, she announced her acting and producing debut in a film titled ‘Water and Garri’ in an Instagram post captioned:
“This is about to be an ICONIC moment. My first lead role as an actor and Executive producer. Directed by the GOAT @mejialabi. Water And Garri the Film Coming Soon”.
The film narrates the tale of Aisha, a thriving fashion designer in the United States, who comes back to her homeland after a decade, prompted by a family tragedy. However, upon her return, she discovers that things are unsettled at home and is compelled to navigate and confront current tension, budding violence and past guilt.
This film is eponymous with her latest EP, which was released in 2021. Not only does Tiwa Savage take on the lead role in the film, but she also sings the original soundtrack and serves as the executive producer. Her level of involvement has the whole of the continent gagged!
In an exclusive with Screen Daily, Tiwa spoke about what this film meant to her, how deeply gratifying it was, and how completely honoured she is.
“This project was a complete labour of love that has been a dream of mine for a number of years. Performing as Aisha allowed me to be totally vulnerable and pushed me to express myself in a way that I’ve never done before. It was an honour to share my debut as an actress with Meji whilst filming on the African continent with a cast and crew that I have immense admiration and respect for. I’m excited for the world to see this film.”
While many may have reservations or share sentiments as to the singer taking a lead role in the film, comments from renowned international director, photographer and cinematographer, Meji Alabi, and Unbound Studios’ Jimi Adesanya make everyone aware of the singer’s multifaceted talent and ability.
“Working with Tiwa Savage and the team on Water and Garri was an incredible experience. We’ve worked together on multiple music projects over the years and this film was a perfect progression of our creative growth and shared vision of exploring beyond boundaries. It’s such an exciting story and Tiwa nailed her debut as a lead actress amongst an incredible supporting cast. Looking forward to sharing this film with the world.” — Meji Alabi to Screen Daily.
“Proud to have produced this incredible film with a talented collective from crew to cast. Both Tiwa Savage, as lead actor, and Meji Alabi, as film director, delivered a powerful debut, alongside our amazing support cast, who truly captured the depth within the story. Our goal is to produce film and TV projects that will level the playing field to collaborate and build high-quality content with both indigenous and major players in succession. The Nollywood industry is very exciting right now with a continuing burst of talent and more distribution access, so we look forward to playing our part to move the needle even further.” — Jimi Adesanya to Screen Daily.
Tiwa’s level of involvement in this film proves that Black women can break free from the chains of societal expectations and not box themselves into one thing. Diversity and versatility are one’s greatest strengths, and it is time for these complexities to be used to recognise Black and African experiences.
As Tiwa has a field day breaking boundaries, she, as well as other incredible Black and African individuals showcasing Black excellence, should be celebrated.
