Dear WFH Community, You May Be Hurting Your Eyes

As part of efforts by businesses to adjust to the new normal, the Work from Home approach (WFH) has become an imperative aspect of the corporate culture.

While we continue to do this, however, to get our jobs done; it is important to also pay attention to the underlying health hazards and take precautions.

‘Work from Home’ means you are also getting more screen time than before because you don’t “shut down” at 5pm to go home anymore and don’t even get us started on the never ending Zoom meetings. This means that you may need some guide on eye care while you are at it.

We spoke to an optometrist, Dr. Chima Lawrence Odoemenam who shared helpful quick tips on eye care practices while working from home.

1) Use the “Harmon Distance” while reading, writing or doing any other close work. The Harmon distance is the distance between your elbow and your middle knuckle, and can be measured by placing your fist at the tip of your chin and placing whatever reading material you have at your elbow. They shouldn’t come closer than this.

2) Observe the 20-20-20 rule. The rule says that for every 20 minutes spent looking at a screen, a person should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. And, remember to blink continuously while looking away. BLINK!!

3) For those working with digital screens, always wear your blue light filter spectacle.
