Artiste Focus: Tiwa Savage

Tiwatope Savage known by her stage name Tiwa Savage is a Nigerian singer-songwriter born in Isale-Eko on the 5th of February 1980. Her genre of music is a blend of Afrobeat, R&B, Pop and Hip-Hop.

Moving to London for her education, Tiwa began her music career in her teens as a backup vocalist for the likes of Mary J. Blige and George Michael. After graduating from the Berkeley College of Music, she participated in the X Factor Uk edition and in 2009, she signed with Sony/ATV publishing.

In 2012, she moved back to Nigeria, signed with Don Jazzy’s Mavin record label and on the 3rd of July 2013, she released her debut album titled ‘Once Upon a Time’ which featured singles like ‘Kele Kele Love’, ‘Love Me (3x)’ and more. This album was nominated for album of the year at the 2014 Headies.

She became the first female Nigerian artiste to be nominated for a BET award in 2014 and since then, she has hit several milestones in the Nigerian music industry and Africa. She has been nominated for multiple awards and has also won many, including the Channel O music award, The Headies, MTV and so many others.

In an industry where women’s career is assumed to be fleeting, Tiwa Savage has remained relevant for over a decade. Her hard work and talent have placed her on a peculiar level among both men and women in the industry and in Africa.
